A diamond does not have to be perfectly clear to be breathtaking. Sometimes, it’s the unexpected which really draws us in. I invite you to stare into the galaxy of a salt and pepper diamond or indulge in the translucent shimmer of an icy Diamond. The delightfully imperfect nature of rustic diamonds has a sensual, understated appeal.
Out in the wild, this type of diamond goes by many names. Sometimes called icy, rustic, salt and pepper or opaque, these monikers are usually determined by their color palette or inclusion patterns. Whichever label you prefer, it’s certain that these diamonds have blossomed in popularity over the last decade
So what’s the difference between a raw, rough, or rustic diamond?
Raw Diamond
Raw is exactly what it implies: It’s the diamond exactly as it was found when it was mined. Raw diamonds are another natural material that we love to work with – they can be referred to as raw, rough, or uncut diamonds. It’s usually amorphous and looks a lot more like a mineral than the shiny, translucent appearance of a fully treated diamond.
Uncut diamonds are just that – they are diamonds that have not been cut or manufactured in any way; they are left in the beautiful, raw state that Mother Nature formed them into. Raw diamonds are set in a ring that fits their shape, rather than molding them to fit into a specific setting.
TYPES OF RAW DIAMONDS
Clear Uncut:
Clear raw diamonds are both high in quality and value, as well as hard to come by – clear rough diamonds are typically cut down and faceted into traditional brilliant cut diamonds. You can see through clear uncut diamonds, and they tend to have a smooth, naturally polished appearance.
Opaque Uncut:
Opaque raw diamonds are stunning stones that typically feature more raw, unusual, and organic shapes. Although you can’t see through opaque raw diamonds, the crystalline surface sparkles and catches the light beautifully.
Rough diamond
Rough diamonds are similar, except they may be cut slightly, whether it’s into a popular “diamond slice” style, or into a shape that’s easier to work with.
Rustic diamond
Rustic diamonds are the most refined of these options. They’re not rough or raw, but they are in a pretty natural state and unlike any of the white diamonds you know and love. Often more opaque, these are the gems that have a deep, almost milky color and have a large number of inclusions that would traditionally deem them less valuable. Whether it’s gray, red, or an orange-plum, the benefit of choosing a rustic diamond is that you’re really getting a precious piece of jewelry that is not only more natural, it has a story of its own and is completely unique.
Rustic diamonds are not new. These rough crystals were once thought to be unusable due to their inclusions. Diamond cutters treated them as cast offs as they cut away to clear crystals. Eventually, they were finally seen for their natural interest and beauty. They began faceting and polishing the imperfect rough into unique shapes which designers quickly embraced.
I find rustic diamonds infinitely intriguing. I am drawn to their muted color palette and inspired by the unique patterns and inclusions within the crystal. Each one is like a fingerprint. No two are identical.
You’ll often find these diamonds in rose cut shapes, with flat backs and a domed, faceted surface. But this unique rough can be purchased in the raw, in diamond slices, and in custom cut shapes.
ROSE CUT
The rose cut diamond, so named because the facets are intended to look like an opening rose-bud, have a flat bottom with a domed top, which allows for a lower profile than a standard brilliant cut diamond with a taller culet.
The most popular of the rustic diamonds are the rose cut, opaque fancy colored diamonds. These can be set just like a cabochon, either with prongs or a full bezel. Many engagement ring designs can be converted to accommodate a rose cut opaque diamond. Rose cut diamonds are also hand-cut, ensuring that no two are exactly alike. Coupled with the fact that they are natural, non-enhanced and feature unique inclusions that give the diamond its own color and character, it’s easy to see why we favor this antique and timeless cut.
Type Of Rose Cut Diamond
Slice (Polki) Diamond
The polki diamond, or diamond slice, is a style of cutting for diamonds whose roots can be traced back to India. Diamond slices are available in lots of different colors and sizes. It is a semi or uncut diamond which comes in different sizes and colors and is lasered off the rock. Each one is completely unique! Some are more transparent than others.
The face of the diamond slice can have just a few large facets, or it might be covered in small, checkerboard type facets. We like the more faceted of the slices; it gives the diamond some a nice sparkle! We can create custom rings with a diamond slice. Polki diamonds are often encased in a bezel setting which protects the fine outer edges of the diamond slice.
